The Line between Art and Accuracy: The Ties between History and the Present

By: Emily Chen

Emily was very curious about the logistics of museum culture as well as how international parties were involved in the maintenance of the exhibits. What intrigued her was that although the museum is a place of memory and commemoration for a historical event, current day events and global dynamics still impact what and how things are shown at the museum.

In her project, Emily also looks at the stories and insights shared by Daria and her mother, Svetlana, about their experiences as refugees and with forced migration due to the current situation in Ukraine. She explores their perspectives on the lessons that we can draw from the conflict in Ukraine. Daria and Svetlana have experienced them first-hand – from being forced to leave their country and knowledge to Daria’s working at the Auschwitz Birkenau State Museum and living in Poland.

While this is a deeply complex subject with many layers, Emily hopes to encourage further conversation about the topic with her project.
